Department Overview & Beliefs
The YCSS Mathematics
Department is dedicated to fostering an enriching learning environment
where students experience the joy of learning through engaging, authentic
experiences. Our curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity and cultivate
a love for Mathematics learning that extends beyond the classroom. We aim
to nurture our students into future-ready, passionate learners, critical
thinkers and creative problem solvers of Mathematics.
Joy of Learning & Authentic Learning
We
believe that learning Mathematics should be an exciting adventure. Our
dedicated team of teachers create a supportive atmosphere that encourages
exploration, creativity and critical thinking. Our approach prioritises
real-world connections and through hands-on activities, interactive projects
and collaborative learning opportunities, students discover the interconnection
between knowledge and concepts learnt in class and its application in solving
real-world problems, in turn, gaining valuable skills and insights, developing
a lifelong enthusiasm for learning and preparing them for the future.
Problem Solvers and Critical Thinkers
In our
department, we nurture students’ abilities to think critically and solve
problems effectively. We encourage inquiry-based learning, where students
ask questions, investigate solutions and reflect on their learning. Through
this process, they develop essential skills such as analytical thinking
and reasoning, collaboration, and resilience - qualities that empower them
to tackle complex challenges both in school and beyond.
Our Students’ Mathematics Learning Experiences
Enrichment Programmes
The full potential of our students’ mathematical abilities is unlocked with our engaging and challenging enrichment programmes. Designed for students who are eager to explore mathematics beyond the standard curriculum, these programmes offer a dynamic environment that fosters critical thinking, problem-solving and creativity.
Mathematics Talent Development Programme
Our Mathematics Talent Development Programme is designed to nurture and enhance the mathematical abilities of our students on interest-basis, providing them with unique opportunities to excel through competitions and insightful lectures/webinars. It is also committed to fostering a passion for mathematics and empowering students to become confident problem solvers and critical thinkers.
We encourage our students to participate in a variety of local, national, and international mathematics competitions. These events not only challenge their problem-solving skills but also foster a spirit of healthy competition and teamwork. Students can showcase their talents and gain recognition for their achievements while developing resilience and confidence in their mathematical abilities. Our programme also offers targeted ad-hoc training sessions and lectures led by experienced educators and lecturers, where our students receive personalised guidance tailored to their skill levels and gain a deeper understanding of the relevance of mathematics in real-world applications, and across various disciplines and careers.
The following are some of the competitions, specialised training sessions and lectures:
